Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the debates concerning the intellectual conditions under which the theology produced by pre-Socratic thinkers was possible. The discussion regarding whether any theological activity existed in the history of early Greek thought is summarized first. Then, the process by which the pre-established gods-images inherent in traditional thought were questioned is addressed, and explanations are offered concerning the consequent rearticulation of these images by allegorical authors. Finally, the impact that the cosmo-theogonic studies—which emerged concurrently with allegorical writings—had on theological reflection is discussed. It is evident that extending the category of pre-Socratic thinkers beyond the conventional names to encompass allegorical and cosmo-theogonic authors serves to accentuate the evolutionary nature of the transition from mythos to logos. These writers are instrumental in establishing the foundational framework of Greek natural theology and in reconceptualizing the preceding Homeric-Hesiodic tradition through their engagement with divine images. It is evident that both genres have made significant contributions to the philosophical and theological issues of their time, and have also maintained their influence over a period extending to Aristotle.
